The Farm is visited by WJW

Over the last few months, WJW has established a friendship with architect and urban farmer, Robert Nevel. This past weekend, he invited us to tour the historic KAM Isaiah Israel Synagogue and urban farm in Hyde Park.

The KAM farm is a project that was initiated by Nevel in 2009. The project proposed replacing the dormant and resource sapping lawn surrounding the historic synagogue with an urban farm capable of producing healthy food to help the community. The farm has been incredibly successful! Since the project first kicked off, KAMII has donated over 22,000 pounds of fresh produce to local hot meal programs and has started farms at other congregations throughout the city. Their goal is to continue developing and expanding their farming program by focusing on the benefits of food forests versus row farming in an urban context.

During our visit, the volunteer farmers were preparing the permanent plant beds for the season and were planting hardier seedlings, which have been germinating indoors since early March. WJW will be following up later this summer to see the farm in full bloom.
