Lunch & Learn with Robert Nevel
On Friday, March 24, 2017, WJW sat down with Architect and urban farmer Robert Nevel to learn about food justice in the Chicagoland area.
Nevel is the founder and director of the KAM Isaiah Israel Food Justice and Sustainability Program in Hyde Park. The program uses urban farming to increase access to healthy food and clean air, water, and soil to the community. Since developing in 2009, the organization has transformed the lawns of 3 houses of worship, within the city, into food gardens, also known as edible landscapes, and donated more than 22,000 pounds of food to local non-profit organizations and partners.
The organization hosts an annual food justice expo on Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, which brings together urban and rural farmers, food and environmental activists, and community members to participate in design workshops, lectures, and discussions on topics related to climate change, urban farming, advocacy, and more.
