Celebrating White Oaks At McHenry Memory Care Seal of Excellence
Every milestone achieved across the senior living community is an opportunity to reflect on what makes exceptional care possible.
We are heartened to congratulate the team at White Oaks at McHenry, a memory care community center, on receiving the prestigious Memory Care Seal of Excellence from the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCPD). This designation places White Oaks among a notable group in the Memory Care Excellence Network (MCEN), a testament to their dedication to person-centered dementia care.
As architects who specialize in senior and supportive living, we often ask ourselves a fundamental question: How do the spaces we design support the care team and individuals who live and work in them daily?
When designing spaces for memory care, the smallest spatial decisions directly shape how a resident experiences their day. At White Oaks, the physical environment was created through a research-based understanding of dementia care best practices:
The Household Concept: The community is divided into four small households where resident units open directly into living, dining, and cozy seating areas, creating a similar feel and scale to a single-family home.
Intuitive Way Finding: Visual cues designed naturally in each household gently prompt residents toward participating in daily activities, fostering independence and a shared sense of community.
Year-Round Access to Nature: Recognizing how vital outdoor connections are to circadian health and well-being, three secure courtyards offer walking paths, shaded seating, and raised garden beds. Each courtyard has it's own distinct identity to help residents navigate the space naturally, complemented by an indoor meditation space and bright, welcoming winter garden.
Beautiful, functional design provides the framework for compassionate, high-quality care. When thoughtful architecture meets an exceptional operational team, residents are able to feel safe, independent, and truly at home. Seeing White Oaks at McHenry recognized on a national level reinforces why we care so deeply about this work: creating dignifying, purposeful environments where residents feel safe and caregivers are set up to thrive.
Congratulations to the White Oaks team and our partners at Gardant on this extraordinary achievement!
