New residents call Lofts on the Square home

Tenants have begun moving into Lofts on the Square in downtown Belleville, Illinois!

Originally built in 1931 as the Hotel Belleville, located in the heart of downtown’s main Public Square, the six-story building sat vacant for ten years and suffered extensive damage in its years of neglect. Now restored and beautifully renovated thanks to the development team of Southwestern Illinois Development Authority (SWIDA) and Bywater Development Group, this 90-year-old building provides 47 new apartments and common area amenities to residents aged 55 and older, and will soon feature either retail or restaurant space on the first floor. Historic details from its original Art Deco era including terrazzo floors, decorative columns and iron railings have been meticulously restored.

WJW is proud to be a partner on this project, preserving an important architectural icon of Belleville and bringing affordable housing to independent seniors in the area!

Coverage of Lofts on the Square was recently featured in the Belleville News-Democrat, including a video showing the damaged building pre-renovation and its major transformation. Check out the article here!
