Evergreen Senior Living at Parkview Campus
Orland Park, IL
A living lab for better senior care
Evergreen Senior Living Orland Park represents the latest iteration of design ideas for senior living — and continues to inspire evolving architectural solutions with real-world impact. The project is the most recent in a series of Assisted Living and Memory Care communities designed for the same client, including sites in Chillicothe, and Decatur, Illinois. Representing the living application of WJW’s consistent research, including in-depth post-occupancy studies and sleepover studies, Evergreen Senior Living Orland Park pushes the design forward to better meet the needs of residents and staff and advance the field of senior living and memory care design.
Combining the comforts of home with the stimulation of a larger community, the building offers 76 assisted living units for seniors needing some additional support with daily living, as well as a 40-unit memory care neighborhood for seniors living with dementia. The design prioritizes empowerment for residents, creating an inviting environment that encourages them to move through their daily activities safely and independently.
A two-story winter garden as well as a comprehensive design for outdoor living fosters a robust connection to nature, an important path to wellness for seniors. Outdoor social activities are enabled via multiple patio areas, a gazebo and a generous outdoor dining area featuring a cedar trellis and outdoor fireplace. Raised garden beds, seating areas and walking paths enliven a spacious “backyard” while secure courtyards offer raised garden beds with carefully selected plants and a winding walking path. Community connections are strengthened via the public-facing outdoor areas, including a main walking path that connects to a nearby trail system.
A welcoming, visually impactful entry invites visitors and residents inside and hints at interiors that prioritize the use of natural materials. Evergreen Senior Living Orland Park is comprised of two components; a 76-unit assisted living community and a 40-unit memory care community for seniors living with dementia. Inviting porches and a gazebo give a home-like first impression. A landscaped interior courtyard allows memory care residents direct interaction with nature, while maintaining their safety. Assisted living residents enjoy outdoor spaces that foster a connection with the outdoors and the surrounding community, complete with outdoor lounging and dining areas to encourage socializing. Set within a park-like setting with walking paths and a playground, the campus helps connect residents with their neighbors, community and families. Soaring, skylit spaces pull natural light into interior common areas. An open floor plan creates a lively venue for residents and visitors to mingle, with unimpeded access to outdoor spaces. Timber frame details and a deft use of natural materials bring warmth and visual interest to the dramatic lobby and common areas. Hearths, with their connotations of gathering, family and home, add intimate scale and liveability. Hearths, with their connotations of gathering, family and home, add intimate scale and liveability.
Evergreen Senior Living Orland Park also represents design that is responsive to both site and surroundings. A vibrant, contemporary look and feel keeps the project in conversation with its dynamic, active suburban setting. As a continued design exploration of amenities for market-rate senior living, the project offers spaces such as a salon and spa; library; media center; activity rooms; and multiple dining choices including a cafe and a fully functioning pub. Residents have enthusiastically embraced the design and array of options provided, forming a highly engaged community that makes the most of every space and amenity.
Built-in flexibility offers a forward-leaning potential for future development of complementary, healthcare-oriented programs on the site, offering the potential for a next step in truly responsive, informed architecture that improves the lives of residents.
