Intro to Architecture Workshop Presentation Day

Future architects flex their creativity

Our summer Intro to Architecture workshop for teens has wrapped up, and we are so proud of our students! Throughout the five-week session, our staff mentors taught partipants about the fundmentals of residential design. Each student created floor plans for a unique home for themselves in fictional "Townsville, Illinois." The process began by having the students identify three descriptive words that would guide the overall look, feel, and concept of the home, and choosing a site for the home within in a neighborhood context. Each home also had to include an "X-Factor" - a unique space, feature, or activity that made the home stand out or reflected something important to the designer.

The workshop culminated with a science-fair style presentation where the students could showcase their work to family, friends, and WJW staff. And these future architects came up with some really terrific concepts and plans! The descriptive words ran the spectrum from "modern, sleek, and linear" to "cozy, calming, and warm." Some featured a boba tea shop, a special garage/engineering workspace, a ceramics studio, and a floral shop. Kudos to our students for all of their creativity and hard work!
